Manchester Tank was founded in Los Angeles in 1946, starting with a single product — a five-gallon vertical tank for propane storage. The company expanded steadily, entering the compressed-air receiver market in 1971 with the acquisition of Western Tank and Steel in Lubbock, Texas, and adding further manufacturing capacity through subsequent acquisitions including Brunner Engineering in 2000.
Today Manchester Tank operates multiple US facilities, including a purpose-built plant opened in Campbellsville, Kentucky in 2020. The company operates as a division of McWane, Inc., which acquired it in 1999. The compressed-air receiver line runs from one-gallon portable tanks to verticals exceeding 1,550 gallons, all built to ASME Section VIII Division 1, U-stamped and National Board registered. Manchester Tank is the name engineers and inspectors already recognize — an 80-year domestic manufacturer whose code stamps are unambiguous and whose product comes with the documentation the compliance file requires. The brand's positioning is deliberately straightforward: quality tanks, made safely in the United States, since 1946. Receiver volume is typically sized to 1–4 gallons per CFM of compressor output for rotary-screw applications (for pressure stability and reduced cycling). Common domestically held verticals run 60–240 gal; larger vessels are manufactured to order up to 2,560 gal.
Most standard industrial compressors run 100–175 PSI; 165 PSI MAWP receivers cover the majority. 200 PSI MAWP is correct for higher- pressure compressors or applications where future flexibility matters. Never size MAWP below the system's relief-valve set pressure.
